Memories Dye Inks
Memories dye inks, also known as gourd ink dyes or ink dyes, are manufactured in the USA by Stewart Superior. They are the best selling dye ink on the market and these are the very same dye inks you've seen demonstrated by Maria Dellos who developed the techniques for using them on gourds.
Memories dye inks have the same semi-transparent quality as leather dye but are non-toxic, water based, fade-resistant, will not streak like leather dye. They blend beautifully AND it is easier to work with! Plus one 1/2 oz. bottle covers approximately 100 small gourds (5”-6” size)! Memories Dye ink are the most popular dye ink for gourd artists because they are fade-resistant, light-fast, acid free and so much more versatile than leather dyes. They are so versatile and you can use a variety of colors to blend and create so many variations then dry and heat set with a embossing heat tool and you're done. What makes these so fun to use is that, unlike alcohol inks and leather dyes, the Memories Inks are blendable. That means you can work with them alone, blend one color into another or blend colors together to make custom colors.
Memories Dye inks are the very same dye inks that Maria Dellos uses and developed the techniques for using the dye ink on gourds. Please check out her book and all the wonderful things you can do with dye ink in Maria Dello's book Gourd Art with Ink Dyes.
Memories chalk & dye ink are available in a wonderful selection of colors. They are slow drying and very blendable so you can create your own custom colors. They are easy and fun to use and they wont fade, leave lines or streak like alcohol based products such as leather dyes. Heat setting the dyes with a heat embossing tool prevents smearing wet inks and dries the colors in seconds so the ink does not smear.
Memories chalk & dye ink are very concentrated so a little goes a very long way. One tiny drop will cover a large area so less is always better.
These dyes are perfect for gourd artists, crafters as well as rubber stamping enthusiasts. They are not intended to be used directly on wood but can be mixed with paint or other mediums. I suggest you experiment mixing the dye ink and experiment on a scrap piece of wood I have had great results mixing it with Jo Sonja and Lumiere paints. Mixing with varnish will also give you a nice stained varnish. So play, have fun, experiment!
The above photos are of gourd ornaments I made using the dye inks. The background was pine tree green and the maple leaves were made with a blend of Memories canary, yellow, ochre, sepia and/or chestnut and port red to create the fiery colors of fall foliage. Memories Chalk Ink
The Memories Chalk ink work just like the regular Memories Dye Ink. The Chalk Ink colors are richer and more vibrant and show up great on darker surfaces. They will work well on gourds, paper (including vellum, coated and glossy papers).
Chalk ink are blendable like the Memories dye ink and they can be applied with the same applicators. The only difference is that you need to shake the bottle well to blend and squeeze a little directly on an applicator or into a plastic storage container or palette so you can just dip the applicator in. This is also good to use for blending the colors. If you want to blend colors on a gourd you can blend directly on the surface of the gourd and then heat set or blend in a palette.
Like the regular dye ink the finish is matte when dried but the color pops when a water-based finish is applied such as the Jo Sonja polyurethane satin varnish. Once dried they resist fading, bleeding or smearing but it is best to heat seal with an embossing heat tool to ensure it is set permanently.

Using the Memories Chalk Ink and Dye Ink
You can apply Memories ink with a variety of applicators. For larger areas I recommend using the foam or felt square applicator cubes, then close the cover and mark it so you can re-use it later. Just spray with water to reactive it later. You can also apply them with foam wedges, seal in a ziplock bag and re-use. For smaller areas and for fine detail I recommend the special cotton-tipped applicators and Taklon micro detail brushes. All of the applicators, brushes and the embossing heat tool that can be used with the chalk ink and dye ink can be found in my gourd craft supplies shop.
Memories Chalk and Dye inks are blendable which makes them more versatile than alcohol inks or leather dyes. You can blend in a palette or directly on the gourd and then heat set.
I typically blend the colors directly on the gourd so I can see exactly what I'm getting while I'm working but you can also blend them together in a plastic palette or storage container.
Suggestion: If the bottle tip gets clogged just use a long straight pin to clear the clog
